I just spent over an hour (literally) trying to open a bottle of wine--the kind with a screw top instead of a cork. I ended up with two bloody knuckles and an activity that kept me sitting in front of CNN for an hour. I saw CNN call the New Hampshire primary for HILLARY CLINTON. I saw Barak Obama give his speech, which was amazing and inspiring and I understand his appeal so clearly now. His intelligence and his eloquence were notable. I loved that he said we will get the troops out of Iraq. However, I'm still on the fence with his lack of experience. He is a Junior Senator from Illinois. But I was almost swayed.
Then, Hillary Clinton came up to her microphone and started with such a line that made me stop and stare at the television and say, "That was genius." She said, "I have spent this week talking to the people of New Hampshire and through you, I have found my voice." And it is all bets are off. She's not as polished/Kennedy-esque as Barak Obama is. But she nailed, to me, anyway, when she said: "Young voters who will vote with their hearts and their minds." I think she was acknowledging Obama's appeal to the idealists but also stating her case that she is the one with the connections and the experience to get the job done intelligently. She will get us out of Iraq slowly and steadily.
I love that people keep saying: Women are making the difference in this campaign. Apparently I missed Hillary Clinton cry after the Iowa caucus and say, "I am a woman running for president" this should matter to you! I especially love that one of the pundits said, black women are going to decide this race. Because--Clinton is the first viable female candidate running for president and Obama is the first viable black candidate. And it is about damn time that black women get to decide something for this country.
I also noticed that I am no longer considered a young voter. I fall outside the 17-29 year old field. But, after reading the book, "Eat, Pray, Love" I am okay with my place in the universe, which includes my age, weight, marital status. So, take that stupid CNN polls. You were wrong about the New Hampshire primary, so how much do you know anyway? I am still a young voter.
And now, I must decide who to vote for. Thank God that this close race has made the candidates be real, authentic, and polite to each other. And thank God both Obama and Clinton said in their speeches that they will get they will end the war in Iraq. That one that Bush declared victory on, oh, six years ago.
